Dear Mayor Gloria and Councilmembers,

I am writing today to urge you to act now to address the road safety crisis and dedicate city funding to make streets safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. I urge you to take immediate action by fully funding the Vision Zero Coalition’s budget request, including:

1.	Fixing the Fatal 15 intersections where people are most at risk,
2.	Painting curbs red to daylight intersections and improve visibility, and
3.	Slowing speeds near schools so every child can arrive safely.

San Diego has pledged to end traffic deaths, but we are far from that promise. Nearly 50 people walking or biking are killed on our streets every year. The City’s decisions to deprioritize safety for vulnerable road users led to a two separate crashes in late October resulting in the death of children. These tragedies were not accidents— they were the predictable and preventable result of choices that prioritize cars over the safety of people.

• At 54th and University, a six-year-old was killed — the second death at this same intersection in two years.
• In San Carlos, an eleven-year-old was killed crossing Jackson Drive, where residents had repeatedly pleaded for safety improvements that were denied because no one had died there yet.

Children should not have to die before the City considers making a street safer. I urge the Mayor and City Council to take action and fund the Vision Zero Coalition’s budget request to prevent future deaths of our loved ones, neighbors, and fellow citizens on the City’s streets.
